SCRN® Certification Requirements

Jan 31, 2019
With excerpts from Stroke Certification Study Guide for Nurses, by Kathy Morrison MSN, RN, CNRN, SCRN

Get moving toward the next chapter in your career by taking the following steps to getting your Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN®) certification.

Make Sure You Qualify for Your Exam!

  1. Do you have a current, unrestricted RN license in the United States, Canada, or a United States Territory that utilizes the U.S. State Board Test Pool Exam or National Council for Licensure Exam?* ALL candidates will be subject to an audit to validate current licensure!

  2. Are you a professional nurse working in stroke care, including bedside (direct practice), research, educator, administrator or consultant (indirect practice) with at least one year, 2,080 hours, of stroke care experience as a registered nurse within the past 3 years?

If you said yes to both, you’re off to a great start to meeting your SCRN Certification Requirements!

*Candidates from other countries will be considered; however, they must meet comparable license requirements and must be able to read and understand English (the test is administered in English).

Apply for the Exam

Before completing your online application for the SCRN® exam, the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing (ABNN) asks that you review the 2018 SCRN Candidate Handbook. You’ll need to register by 5 PM Central on the 15th of the month in order to take the exam during the following 2 months. Refer to the Candidate Handbook for a detailed list of deadlines!

Schedule Your Exam

The SCRN® certification exam is computer-based and administered by PSI Services. PSI has over 300 locations, which you can locate here.

After you’ve completed your online registration, expect to receive notification of your eligibility either by email and/or letter. Then it’s time to schedule your exam! You can do so in a couple ways:

  1. Schedule it online by heading to PSI’s Online Application/Scheduling service at www.goAMP.com and selecting “Candidates”

  2. Schedule it over the phone by calling PSI toll-free at 888-519-9901. Be prepared to confirm a date and location for testing and provide your name and candidate identification number (which can be found on your PSI scheduling notice)

Start Studying (if you haven’t already!)

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to prepare—most people take at least 2 or 3 months, given the amount of content you need to know. You can start preparing by taking our free practice quiz here. And you’ll probably need a few exam preparation products to help you study in more depth. You can check out what we have here.
