So, what do you do next? Get moving toward the next chapter in your career by taking the following steps.
Make sure you qualify for your exam! Do you have…
- A current, unrestricted RN license?
- Documentation that you’ve practiced full time as an RN for the equivalent of two years?
- A minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in gerontology within the past three years?
- Documentation of 30 continuing-education hours in the gerontology specialty that you’ve acquired in the past three years?
If you said yes to all four, you’re off to a great start!
Apply for the exam!
The first thing you’ll need to do is apply for the exam. You can do so by visiting the ANCC’s Gerontological Nursing page. The ANCC administers its exams in Prometric Testing Centers, located in 180 countries. After you have registered with the ANCC for the test, go to www.prometric.com/ANCC to set up a date and time to take the computerized test. After this, an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice will be sent to you from the testing center; as soon as you receive the ATT, make an appointment during the 90-day eligibility period found on your ATT form. If you need to change your date, time, or test-site location, just follow the directions in the ANCC General Testing and Renewal Handbook.
