So, what do you do next? Get moving toward the next chapter in your career by taking the following steps toward CHPN® certification.
Make sure you qualify for the CHPN exam!
If you said yes to both, you’re off to a great start!
Apply for the exam!
There are two ways to apply for the CHPN exam. To apply online, visit advancingexpertcare.org and choose the test you wish to take under the Certification tab. Click the “Begin Online Exam Application” button, which will take you to the PSI website where your application can be completed, eligibility confirmed, and exam scheduled.
You can also apply through the mail. You’ll need to complete a paper application, which you’ll find in the Candidate Handbook that is available here. Your completed application and fee can then be mailed to HPCC:

To apply for the CHPN exam, be ready to provide:
The fee for CHPN® certification is $415 (or $295 for HPNA members).
Get approved for CHPN® certification!
If applying online, your eligibility will be confirmed or denied after you’ve submitted your application information and payment. The next step will be to schedule an exam or provide additional information to verify eligibility.
It may take up to 2 weeks to process a paper application. PSI will process your paper application and send a confirmation notice, which will include a website address and toll-free number to schedule an appointment for your exam.
Start studying (if you haven’t already!)
Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the CHPN certification exam — most people take at least 2 or 3 months to prepare, given the amount of content you need to know. Use Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) Exam Review to help you study in more depth. .

- Do you have a current, active nursing license in the United States or its territories, or in Canada?
- Do you have 500 hours of practice in the area of hospice and palliative nursing within the past 12 months OR 1,000 hours of practice within the past 24 months?
