American Library Association Awards “History of Psychology 101” Outstanding Academic Title of 2014; Springer Publishing Company Accepts Rare Distinction

(NEW YORK, NY) – January 28, 2015 - Springer Publishing Company is proud to announce that Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, a publication of the American Library Association (ALA), has selected its title History of Psychology 101 for its highly selective annual Outstanding Academic Title list. Written by David C. Devonis, PhD and published as part of the acclaimed Psych 101 series, the book presents a concise, accessible overview of the modern history of psychology, focusing on making historical information relevant to psychological practice today. The author is Professor and program coordinator of Psychology at Graceland University (IA).

Says Devonis: “I see history as like a road map to the past which is always there for us to explore, and from which we can always return to the present with whatever we find useful on our travels. My goal in writing this book was to provide a road map to make the past 80 years of psychology accessible for today’s psychologists, clinical, applied, and experimental alike, and I am thrilled that Choice has recognized this effort.”

History of Psychology examines the key developments in psychology and connects the historical development of psychology to present concerns in the field. Woven throughout the book is a thread of optimism regarding the value of psychological ideas for the betterment of humanity. The book considers how psychology has informed -and been influenced by-the social and cultural milieus of the past century. Each chapter highlights a theme that typified the science and practice of psychology in a particular era, along with a "historical centerpiece," an examination of an exemplary psychologist or psychological work that typified the field's development during that time period.

Said Nancy Hale, Editorial Director of Social Sciences at Springer Publishing Company: “With only 3 percent of titles submitted to Choice making the cut for the OAT list, we are truly honored that this title has been selected. Dr. Devonis has done an outstanding job of making the history of psychology come alive for contemporary readers, illuminating not just how psychological theories developed but how they have been applied and practiced.”

History of Psychology 101 is available from Springer Publishing’s website, as well as on Amazon and Kindle.
