Writing a book was something I had never seriously considered before. We all change though, and circumstances in our lives lead us down paths we might never have otherwise chosen. I have always considered myself to be a cautious person who measures out the pros and cons of every step before embarking on a journey; I am not a risk taker, but my world changed forever in November of 2010 when I lost my husband of 29 years. After that, every day was a risk as I learned to live my life alone. It was shortly after his death that I was approached to write this book.
My mentor and friend, Dr. Ruth Wittmann-Price, encouraged myself and my friend and co-author, Dr. Rhonda Brogdon, to write a book on medical-surgical unfolding case studies. Since I teach medical-surgical content in our baccalaureate nursing program, it was obvious to me how helpful this book would be to all nursing students, as well as new graduates preparing for the NCLEX-RN. Needing a direction in my life, I took the risk and embarked on this unknown and at times frightening journey.
After a year of work, I am very proud to see the publication of our book, Medical Surgical Nursing Test Success: An Unfolding Case Study Review. This book provides realistic unfolding case studies with multiple styles of NCLEX-RN questions and provides eResource links throughout the book for the most up-to-date information. This is an alternative way for pre-licensure RN nursing students to study medical-surgical concepts throughout their nursing program and in preparation for taking the NCLEX-RN. It is my sincere hope that this book will help our students to be more successful as they work toward their career ambition.
This book gave me purpose at a time in life when I was struggling. I could not be prouder of this book as I dedicate it to the love of my husband and family. Perhaps I am still not a risk taker, but I am a survivor.
