Dealing with adult patients, the adult psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners assess, diagnose, and manage mental health issues that include bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. They may have additional training in psychotherapy or any other behavioral treatment modalities.
Registered nurse (RN) preparation and Nurse Practitioner certification required. Certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center also is available as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, another advanced practice nursing specialty role, in psychiatric and mental health; experience as a Mental Health RN is preferred.

- Advanced knowledge in mental health

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge in psychopharmacology and behavioral science therapy
