Manuscripts should be prepared per the latest edition of Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. All articles must be original material, not previously published and not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced with one inch margins in 8 1/2 × 11-inch format.
Original research articles should be between 5,000 and 6,500 words in length, excluding references, but including endnotes. Articles greater in length may be considered, depending upon the relevance of the topic to the aims of the journal. Authors interested in submitting a manuscript over 6,500 words should consult one of the editors prior to submission. Practice and clinically oriented manuscripts should be between 2,000 and 4,000 words in length and book reviews should be no more than 1,000 words.
All original research and clinical/practical submissions must include an abstract between 150 and 250 words in length summarizing the article’s scope and findings.
Titles and Authors’ Names
To facilitate a blind review, the first page of the manuscript should include the titles, authorship, academic degrees, position, address, telephone number, and a short biographical note of the author(s) for publication with the article. Any grant support requiring acknowledgment should be mentioned on this page.
Authors should supply a list of four words, not appearing in the title, which will be used for indexing.
Except for units of measurement, abbreviations are discouraged. Consult the APA Publication Manual for lists of standard abbreviations. The first time an abbreviation appears it should be preceded by the words for which it stands.
Generic names should generally be used. When proprietary brands are used in research, include the brand name in parentheses in the Methods section.
References should be limited to those cited in the text and should follow the style indicated in the APA Publication Manual.
All notes follow the text as endnotes, with the endnotes section beginning on a new page. Notes should be restricted to information directly relevant to the text and must be numbered consecutively throughout the text by superscript numerals.
Type tables with double-spacing in separate files, and provide a title for each. Designate all artwork by placing the citation (Figure 1) or (Table 2) in the text.
Figures should be professionally designed. Use of color images may be used to enhance any art (tables, figures, photos, etc.) featured within your manuscript. Color reproductions can be used, however authors or their institutions must bear the cost for any color reproduction in the print version.
Guidelines for submitting figures/images:
- Make sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork.
- Number the illustrations per their sequence in the text.
- Line illustrations should be submitted at 900 dpi.
- Halftones and color should be submitted at a minimum of 300 dpi.
- Save as either TIF or EPS files.
- Color art must be saved as CMYK - not RGB.
- Black and White art must be submitted as grayscale - not RGB.
- PowerPoint or Excel files should NOT be submitted.
Conflict of Interest
We request that authors of articles do not have any financial interest in a company (or its competitor) that makes a product discussed in the article. Address questions about this issue to the Editor.
If applicable, authors should include a brief acknowledgment on the title page. Acknowledgments may include reference to grants or other financial assistance and/or reference to any individual(s) who, although not considered a primary author, contributed to the manuscript. Do not include acknowledgments in the body of your manuscript submission. If your manuscript is accepted for publication, we will add the acknowledgments at a later stage.
Release for Publication
When a paper emanates from or identifies an institution, the author is responsible for securing any necessary authorization required by that institution prior to submitting the manuscript. The author is responsible for obtaining written permission of persons who can be identified in the photographs submitted and for obtaining publisher and author permission for the use of copyrighted materials, including illustrations, photographs, and lengthy quotations. When case studies involve actual persons, written release is required.
Springer Publishing Company copyrights all articles appearing in the Journals. Accepted manuscripts become the permanent property of the Journal. Authors are free to use the material elsewhere after it has appeared in print and the publisher has been provided with notice.
Reprints should carry copyright information and cite the Journals as the original source.
Responsibilities and Permissions
Statements and opinions expressed in articles are those of the author(s). The Editor, Publisher, and reviewers disclaim any responsibility for such statements. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of statements made in their manuscripts.
- Materials taken from other sources must be accompanied by a written statement from the author and publisher giving permission to the Journal for reproduction.
- Obtain permission in writing from at least one author of papers still in press, unpublished data, and personal communications.
Review and Action
We use a rigorous double blind peer review process in which the identities of reviewers and authors are concealed from both parties. Original research manuscripts are initially examined by the editorial staff to insure appropriate content for the journal and are then sent to at least two outside reviewers. Reviewers will comment on accuracy of information, clarity, organization, and originality of the text as well as its relevance to the Journal’s audience. In some cases, manuscripts may undergo a second review by external readers. Practical/clinical articles undergo review by the editors and may also have external peer review if it is deemed necessary by the editors.
Authors will be consulted when changes of a technical or substantive nature are made. The responsibility for stylistic changes and necessary cutting as space demands will be assumed by the editorial staff.
All manuscripts accepted for publication are subject to manuscript editing. Complimentary copies of the journal issue in which a finished article appears will be sent to the author(s). Contributors also can obtain offprints.
