Job purpose:

Senior Acquisitions Editor is responsible for the acquisition and development of a significant volume of the Company’s key revenue and growth market for books and other print and digital course content. The primary objective for this position is to develop a customer-focused publishing strategy for each publishing area that will maximize sales and return on investment and articulate plans and strategy for long term success of the publishing program and product line. The person in this position will work with all other functions within the Company to assure high quality products, as well as to maximize marketing and sales opportunities., as well as represent the company to key constituents including authors and potential customers.


Duties and responsibilities:

  • Acquire, develop, and publish new products and revisions of current products in large value portfolio of assigned disciplines to meet targeted goals and strategic list plan. Acquire an assigned number of products.
  • Develop publishing plans and longer-term and forward-thinking publishing strategies for assigned markets and present to publishing committee
  • Develop and maintain a keen knowledge of markets and competition; Stay up-to-date on developments and new directions in each market
  • Develop specific ideas for new titles (including books, journals, and digital products); identify top prospective authors and develop ideas with them
  • Develop strategies for expanding, re-purposing, or re-packaging existing (and future) content through various media to maximize the value of the portfolio. Develop proposals with financial plan and present for approval
  • Work in conjunction with current and prospective authors, reviewers, contributing editors, and freelancers, as well as internal staff to accomplish acquisitions, development and transmittal tasks. Grow author talent pool and enhance editor – author – reviewer relationships
  • Work with authors to maximize editorial quality of manuscripts; Negotiate contracts with authors; Work with authors, sales and marketing to maximize sales opportunities for each title
  • Serve as the "voice and face" of the company to authors, customers, and other partners; Represent and act as ambassador for Springer Publishing externally
  • Manage controllable costs associated with the development of new titles and revisions; Plan, track and manage budgets and costs associated with projects on assigned lists ; Monitor projected sales and performance of product line
  • Launch products into production and coordinate with Production and Manufacturing to help ensure timely completion; Participate in discussions regarding planning of production schedules to ensure they are prepared for products going through acquisition processes
  • Provide guidance, training and leadership to Acquisition Editors and Assistants; Provide additional back-up support to Publisher as needed including acts on behalf of Publisher when needed or in absence
  • Set standards of professionalism and leadership in interactions with all internal staff.



  • 7 years publishing to include book and digital product acquisition experience with an academic / higher education publisher preferably in Nursing; directing, developing and acquiring a complete product line including print and electronic (book and journal publishing)
  • BA or BSN required; MSN or MA in arts or humanities preferred
  • Knowledge of educational market trends and the competitive environment, particularly within the specified nursing discipline.
  • Effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and translate ideas into books and/or digital products and to foresee trends, situations, or problems
  • Demonstrated ability to grow product lines in terms of scope, breadth, revenue and profitability through editorial or outside acquisitions and the leverage of content into other pertinent media or formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with sales and marketing teams to inform and enhance effective promotional and licensing opportunities and textbook adoption process.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and follow through on priorities; plan and manage multiple projects and effectively multi-task; effectively manage time to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, reason, and problem solve effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgeting, analyze costs, and perform financial reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to work within, and help lead, teams and coach or manage others, as well as work independently
  • Excellent Communication and presentation skills


Physical requirements

This position requires travel of about 25%; able to drive and fly to destinations as required
