Job Opening: Senior Acquisitions Editor, Behavioral Sciences

Job Purpose

Senior Acquisitions Editor is responsible for the growth of a segment of the company’s behavioral sciences portfolio through the acquisition and development of new and existing content assets. The role involves significant author and editor contact, editorial management, proposal development and presentation, contract negotiation, preview and preparation of manuscripts for production, promotional planning and monitoring of sales performance. The individual is responsible to develop a customer-focused publishing strategy across all formats and platforms for each publishing area that maximizes sales and return on investment, and articulates plans and strategies for long term success of the publishing program and product line. Work with all other functions within the Company to assure high quality product as well as to maximize marketing and sales opportunities. Represent the company to key constituents including authors and customers.

Duties and responsibilities:

Editorial Acquisition

  • Acquire, develop, and publish new products and revisions of current products in large value portfolio of assigned disciplines to meet targeted goals and strategic list plan; Acquire assigned number of books/products per year.
  • Develop publishing plans and longer-term publishing strategies for assigned markets
  • Develop specific ideas for new topic areas (print and digital products); Identify top prospective authors and develop ideas with them
  • Develop proposals, including financial plan, and present for approval

Product Management

  • Manage controllable costs associated with the development of new products and revisions; Plan, track, and manage budgets and costs associated with sponsored titles; Monitor projected sales and performance of product line
  • Launch products into production and coordinate with Production and Manufacturing to help ensure timely product publication; Participate in discussions regarding planning of production schedules to ensure they are prepared for books going through acquisition processes

Market Knowledge

  • Develop keen knowledge of markets and competition; Stay up-to-date on developments and new directions in each market
  • Work in conjunction with current and prospective authors, contributing editors, and freelancers, as well as internal staff to accomplish acquisitions, development and transmittal tasks; Grow author talent pool and enhance editor – author – reviewer relationships
  • Develops and maintains significant list/contacts with key opinion leaders (KOL)
  • Work with authors to maximize editorial quality of manuscripts; Negotiate contracts with authors; Work with authors, sales, and marketing to maximize sales opportunities for each title
  • Serve as the "voice and face" of the company to authors, customers, and other partners; Represent and act as ambassador for Springer Publishing externally


  • 7 years publishing to include book acquisition experience with a higher education and/or professional publisher in the behavioral sciences area
  • BA Required
  • Knowledge of educational market trends and the competitive environment, particularly within the specified discipline
  • Effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and translate ideas into print and digital products and to foresee trends, situations, or problems
  • Demonstrated ability to set and follow through on priorities; Plan and manage multiple projects and effectively multi-task; Effectively manage time to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, reason, and problem solve effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgeting, analyze costs, and perform financial reporting
  • Excellent Communication and presentation skills

Physical requirements

Must be willing and able to travel. This position requires travel of about 15%; able to drive and fly to destinations as required
