Job Opening: Senior Acquisitions Editor, Behavioral Science - Text Books

Job purpose:

Senior Acquisitions Editor is responsible for the acquisition and development of core texts as main focus along with other print and digital course content for the designated Behavioral Science discipline(s), develop a customer-focused publishing strategy for each publishing area that will maximize sales and return on investment, and articulate plans and strategy for long term success of the publishing program and product line. Work with all other departments within the Company to assure high quality products, as well as to maximize marketing and sales opportunities. Represent the company to key constituents including authors and potential customers.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Acquire, develop, and publish new products and revisions of current products in portfolio of assigned disciplines to meet targeted goals for growth and strategic list plan; Acquire an assigned number of titles per year
  • Develop publishing plans and longer-term publishing strategies for assigned markets
  • Develop keen knowledge of markets and competition; Stay up-to-date on developments and new directions in each market
  • Develop specific ideas for new titles (print and digital products); Identify top prospective authors and develop ideas with them
  • Develop proposals, including financial plan, and present for approval
  • Work in conjunction with current and prospective authors, contributing editors, and freelancers, as well as internal staff to accomplish acquisitions, development and transmittal tasks; Grow author talent pool and enhance editor – author – reviewer relationships
  • Work with authors to maximize editorial quality of manuscripts; Negotiate contracts with authors; Work with authors, sales, and marketing to maximize sales opportunities for each title
  • Serve as the "voice and face" of the company to authors, customers, and other partners; Represent and act as ambassador for Springer Publishing externally at professional conferences and campus visits; expand relationships with societies, associations, faculty and students
  • Manage controllable costs associated with the development of new titles and revisions; Plan, track, and manage budgets and costs associated with sponsored titles; Monitor projected sales and performance of product line
  • Launch products into production and coordinate with Production and Manufacturing to help ensure timely product publication
  • Set standards of professionalism and leadership in interactions with all internal staff

Qualifications:

  • 7 years publishing to include book acquisition experience with an academic publisher in Behavioral Science or related disciplines
  • BA Required; MA in psychology, counseling or health science major preferred
  • Knowledge of educational market trends and the competitive environment, particularly within the specified disciplines
  • Excellent listening, verbal, presentation and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and translate ideas into print and digital products and to foresee trends, situations, or problems
  • Demonstrated ability to set and follow through on priorities; Plan and manage multiple projects and effectively multi-task; Effectively manage time to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate, reason, and problem solve effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgeting, analyze costs, and perform financial reporting

Physical requirements

This position requires travel of about 15%; able to drive and fly to destinations as required
