Job Opening: Manufacturing Manager

Overview

Springer Publishing Company is looking for a talented and experienced Manufacturing Manager. This position, reporting to VP Production is responsible for estimating, scheduling, and timely delivery to Springer’s warehouse(s) all Springer Publishing print product and for ensuring the maintenance of appropriate inventory levels of all printed product. We are looking for an experienced book manufacturing individual from a competitive publishing house with demonstrated ability at ensuring the most efficient and economical manufacturing operation.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in driving process improvement and delivering results. The individual must be flexible and very organized with preferred experience working with Ingram, offshore printing and Acumen. This individual must possess the demonstrated ability to manage the day-to-day manufacturing operations and ensure a smooth, efficient and timely process.

This position requires the individual to maintain positive and cooperative working relations with a broad audience of customers and vendors as well as internal cross-departmental staff. The ideal candidate will drive improvements, ensuring efficiencies up and down the manufacturing workflow.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Analyze proposed book specifications and book proofs/sample pages for print requirements and for offset/digital versus POD printing; secure competitive bids when appropriate and assist Editorial in creating proposal P&Ls; make vendor assignments and paper assignments, provide cover templates to designers/production editors, secure digital access codes for variable data printing on inside front covers. Create manufacturing purchase orders for new titles and reprints; approve and/or reconcile vendor invoices and monthly statements.
  • Review printer proofs, inspect and approve sample copies, distribute office copies, send publication announcements to appropriate staff. Ensure that projected and actual pub dates and specifications are always updated in the production database and Acumen.
  • Create per-project and annual budgets; manage actual costs against budgeted costs on a per-project and annual basis. Run quarterly analytics to determine possible new strategies, possible changes in purchasing and inventory patterns, etc.
  • Manage print and digital schedules to ensure adoption availability and avoid Amazon chargebacks. Maintain Acumen job record (enter projected costs, update final page count, print quantity, and expected publication date); update production reports.
  • Ensure appropriate new titles are placed with our POD partners and arrange for samples to assess quality. Constantly review pricing to ensure that the program is as profitable as possible.
  • Support Sales in bidding for and manufacturing of customized product. Manage integration, quality testing, and file delivery to new offshore vendors.
  • Work with Higher Education Sales to ensure inventory availability for potential adoptions via SalesForce reporting.
  • Maintain relationships with printing partners. Investigate and assess potential vendors including offshore vendors.
  • Review process improvements at both the vendor and Springer sides so that we may improve pricing and speed up delivery schedules.
  • Conduct periodic checks/analyses to ensure that current vendors are providing competitive pricing and standardized Springer specifications are current and reflect product needs.
  • Maintain estimating scales for Editorial’s use in creating proposal P&Ls.
  • Support catalog etc. printing initiatives working with Marketing as needed.

Qualifications and Competency Requirements

  • A minimum of five years book manufacturing experience at a competitive Publishing house
  • Experience with Acumen a plus
  • Experience working with Ingram a plus
  • POD, digital, and offshore printing experience
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and implementing best practices
  • Detail-oriented and highly skilled at collaborative management, team building and developing strong organizational relationships
  • Proven time management and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Possesses excellent communication, organizational and planning skills

Physical requirements

Business travel is not expected but may on occasion be required.
