Job Opening: Assistant Editor, Medical and Health Sciences

Job purpose:

Springer Publishing Company is seeking an Assistant Editor for our medical and health sciences publishing programs. The Assistant Editor ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the editorial/acquisitions department working directly with editors, authors, and all internal staff as needed. Supports two Acquisition Editors, authors, and contributors in all aspects of the publishing process from proposal to bound books and serves as a key interdepartmental contact.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Assist with evaluation of production-readiness for new manuscripts
  • Assist with preparing publishing plans and proposals, tracking projects, and monitoring delivery commitments to ensure timely completion
  • Prepare, record, and route contracts for newly acquired projects
  • Correspond with authors and contributors regarding manuscript preparation and submission details; send out guidelines and contributor packages
  • Manage contributor contract process for multi-authored works
  • Log in, review, and evaluate manuscripts as they are submitted
  • Track and receive missing manuscript materials from authors
  • Transmit manuscripts from Editorial to Production
  • Maintain accuracy, integrity and currency of departmental publishing plans, records, and databases
  • Solicit and compile endorsements for back cover copy and promotional material
  • Help draft, edit, and proofread back cover copy, marketing materials, catalogs, brochures, press releases, and web and other sales copy
  • Manage Library of Congress registration process
  • Solicit peer reviews of book proposals and draft manuscripts as needed
  • As assigned, manage the editorial process on selected projects assuming all author communications from contract to publication

 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years publishing experience preferred
  • BA required
  • Detail-oriented, extremely organized, superior project management skills, with advanced writing and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects at once, meet deadlines, and effective time management
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, effective team-player
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Willingness to travel as needed (2-3 meetings per year)

 

Physical requirements:

This position requires occasional travel and the ability to drive and fly to destinations as required.
